56Kbaud modem history....

W.F.Rakecky says to Joe "Don't forget TOWNSEND," and Joe responds "My COMS/USRX history book doesn't go back that far (I bought COMS back in spring '97...)."

Townshend came up in late '97. He was a guy with some patents (filed or granted? not sure) relating to PCM modulation, who had a relationship to 3Com, and 3Com announced that they had the rights to market this technology to other 56K modem manufacturers, and that they would probably need it.

A good place for modem history is the archives at 56k.com

Here's their first reference to Townshend (with links to other media), from their history file in September 1997:

Hope this helps... won't move the stock price, though.
