GOOD POINT- the reason amat pre announced is because the big semi conference--SEMICON -starts monday and amat is the key speaker at the open. also, DLJ MADE a good point that registration is way down this year at the conference and could be used as a contrarian indicator because registarion was highest in july of 1995, dead in summer of 1996, high in 1997, and this summer its not that great. also, semicon coould give this group a good boost because you should see new introduction of technologies-ie copper- and could support these things a little. what i find strange about amat is their the leader but i find their order flow and eps not as strong as some of the other semis group-nvls especially. either two things-the whole group is in bigger trouble thanm i believe or amat is having specific problems. also, amat got hurt because last quarter they closed 50%of their sales in the last month of the quarter which didn't leave much for this quarter. IMO. AMAT WILL HAVE TO LAY OFF 10-20% its workforce to remain profitable. THANK GOD we are in a liquidity bull market or this this thing would be 15 soon.
