CDR..CDRW

I do not know if the problem was disc thickness or a defective caddy or both. Too tight or too loose in the caddy or? Anyhow the setup now works with new caddies. I will keep the 8Plex and add another drive if I need it. Three round trips is enough for me. I like a lot of CD drives. I can keep my WOW stock data CD in a drive and still have the other two drives available. I think I need one of the fourteen drive towers with a lot of external 5 1/4 bays for all of my harddrives and CD drives. The 9 GB SCSI drives are starting to look affordable.<g>

I am not a caddy fan but I have two caddy drives now:( If caddies were affordable it would be a good solution as I would buy a caddy for each CD and not have to handle the discs...but $ 9 each!!

I have three CD drives in the machine. One is my old Sony IDE 16 x. I like the speed for loading software. Speed on a source CD drive is not an issue? if I copy CD to CD as the Ricoh 6201S RW writes at 2x. I do not want to overwork the Plextor<G>

I have had some luck copying CD to CD. No multitasking yet. A lot of things to try before I add that variable.

I backed up two of my audio CD's and they work great in my machine and my home stereo system. They do not work in my car CD player. I tried blue on silver and gold on gold. Neither worked in the car. I have been buying low end media. The sites Sean referenced indicated the cost of the media is not significant. I guess I have to find the right combination for the car player. The best I can figure it is the reflectivity of the media that makes the difference and not the backup procedure.

NTI CD-Maker Pro ver 3.1.571 gave me a little trouble on my third try. The message indicated there was not enough room on the CDR media and aborted. I tried transferring the tracks to the harddrive..still no go. I tried using the CD Image function..still no...tried one track and the file size was still too big to fit on the CD so I gave up.

I downloaded a trial version of CDR-WIN ver 3.5C by Goldenhawk. The trial version is the same as the full version but is locked at 1X. You can demo for 30 days and then send $. goldenhawk.com , one of the ones Sean mentioned. I tried disc at once copy on the strange CD and it reported an error message and aborted. I copied a couple of tracks to the harddrive and then used the cue function and voila! The program is basic. To use the cue function you have to open a text editor and type in the files you want to record. It's simplicity must make it work. It must not check disc capacity before a write. One might get in trouble if they exceed capacity without checking it out for themselves.

A comment on CDR-WIN from the CDR Copying Stuff Site

VERY NICE WINDOWS BASED COPIER.
(I cannot find fault with this copier, the latest version implements disk caching, no coasters so far. This is the only one that i use and have purchased, i would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jeff Arnold on a superb program, money well spent.)

Perhaps the disc caching addresses the multitasking issue that Sean is talking about?

I have not tried backing up my drives yet. I plan on using Power Quest Drive Image. My software loads already exceed a gig so I will have to compress. Even DVD-R ( I saw one today at Dirt Cheap Drives, only $16,000) will not solve the backup size problem with sub $300 11.5 GB Maxtors.

I have not purchased any RW media yet. I saw one at the local shop for $6.95 (the sticker underneath was $8.95) Most of the RW media is $20.

This one's keeping me busy
