Michael, did you really read my post about the Indians? I am saying just as you are that better conditions on the reservations will help more Indians get the start in life that leads to success. And I am not advocating endless apologizing, either. There is a big difference, though, between all the groups in America who have had some frictions in getting along together, and the Indians and blacks, who were really wronged by genocide or enslavement. Why is it that conservatives are so against apologizing, incidentally? It has worked towards healing in the other countries I mentioned. And what are you talking about pagans for? The white settlers who came to America were Christians, who committed all sorts of atrocities in God's name, very deliberately, under their belief in Manifest Destiny. The reason I would advocate apologizing, Michael, is because it sort of clears the air and allows everyone to look forward instead of backward. When one group has wronged another and does not apologize, everyone gets stuck where they are. So the policy I advocate is geared towards looking forwards. You are deluding yourself if you think school vouchers will really allow anyone but the very rich to attend schools like Chelsea Clinton attended, Michael. The result of the voucher system will be that some children will be attending cheap, minimal church-run schools in basements, and the public schools will be even worse off than they are already. Everywhere you look in America, where the public schools have been able to keep middle class children of educated parents in their systems, they continue to do okay. When they lose these children, they fail, and part of that is because disadvantaged children learn from middle class children in their classes, and middle class parents have the time, energy and money to participate in the educational process.
