I'm not aware of any involvement by Gates or Dell, but Intel has a position and options to expand it!

James,

I know it was the talk of the Dell thread at the time that M. Dell was one of the original investors in Rambus.

OKI: OKI licenses Rambus technology for Logic ICs
Presswire - July 22, 1998 13:48
M2 PRESSWIRE-22 July 1998-OKI: OKI licenses Rambus technology for Logic ICs (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

-- High speed interface key component to Oki's "system-on-chip" strategy

TOKYO -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. and Rambus Inc. announced today that Oki has licensed two generations of Rambus interface technology for logic and Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC). The Rambus Access Cell (RAC) is a key component for Oki's Silicon Platform Architecture (SPA) system-on-chip strategy. The product will be available in Oki's ASIC library by the end of 1998.

"The Rambus logic license expands Oki's Rambus IC offering," said Mr. Subodh Toprani, general manager and vice president of Rambus' Logic Products Division. "As Rambus DRAM interface licensee since 1993, Oki has been shipping Rambus DRAMs since 1996. Using Rambus interface technology for ASIC products as well as for DRAMs, Oki will be able to provide a system component solution to their customers."

"The Rambus ASIC Core, with its low power and high performance capabilities, is a key ingredient in the design of many Silicon Platform Architecture (SPA)strategy for meeting very diverse customer needs with a 'system-on-chip' silicon solution," said Mr. Yasuaki Ozawa, Director and Senior General Manager of the LSI Division, Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd.

Oki has joined over 50 other companies that are committed to using Rambus technology within their products, including 15 DRAM manufacturers, 20 logic IC suppliers and 25 companies representing the leaders in system-memory implementation products.

Oki's Rambus interface supports controllers for both the currently shipping Concurrent RDRAMs' and next-generation Direct RDRAMs'. Concurrent Rambus technology enables high-performance operation with low system cost and is used with multimedia, communications, and consumer electronics products, such as digital television and personal computers. Direct Rambus technology enables unprecedented DRAM performance --- 1.6 GB per second of peak bandwidth from a single device.

"Silicon Platform Architecture (SPA)" is Oki's semiconductor business strategy used to distribute Oki's memory, logic and system LSI devices more evenly across the company's various divisions. This helps standardize the platform of system LSI integration, which is vital to its acceptance into everyday electronic equipment.

Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS), based in Mountain View, CA, develops and licenses high-speed chip-to-chip communications technology, that enables semiconductor memory devices to keep pace with the faster generations of processors and controllers. Providers of Rambus-based integrated circuits include the world's leading DRAM, ASIC and PC controller manufacturers.
