Merrill Lynch has just completed the most thorough study of the problem and is optimistic. I believe Y2K is part of the crisis of the old order in software--opaque codebloat--and will accelerate the move to the new paradigm of internet based component programs that circumvent the Microsoft channels. I suspect that the big problems will come in embedded chips with firmware--there are billions out there--and it is impossible to know how many have date fields. But like everyone else, I am mostly guessing. It is a fundamentally complex issue, like predicting the weather two years in advance. To forestall self fulfilling panic, we will have to have some good leadership from Washington and Redmond--to site the two relevant capitals. What do you think?
