Roger,

The reason to deviate from the Fibre Channel standard is that under the standard, there is apparently no way for private loop devices (legacy hardware) to attach to the fabric (switch). The standard DOES allow public loop devices (new hardware) to attach, but those devices are not shipping in quantity yet. So, the reason to deviate from the standard is to support an existing hardware base.
