Users aren't exempt from libel and defamation laws, however. In February, Presstek (PRST), digital imaging company in Hudson, N.H., settled a lawsuit with three people who posted defamatory remarks about the company mostly through America Online postings, according to general counsel Bob McDaniel.

The defendants used the Internet to push down the company's stock, he said. They posted "things that just simply did not exist," like allegations that Presstek executives were being subpoenaed for grand jury investigations, McDaniel said.
