Lucent Technologies/ lucent to supply wireless access systems
to cote d'ivoire telecom

July 10, 1998

PARIS, FRANCE, M2 PRESSWIRE via NewsEdge
Corporation : Lucent Technologies announced today that
it has signed a three-year contract with Cote d'Ivoire
Telecom, the Ivory Coast's national telecommunications
operator, to supply wireless access systems.

The new wireless networks will allow Cote d'Ivoire
Telecom to bring telephone services to about 150 more
villages and 6,000 remote subscribers in the Ivory Coast.

Lucent's wireless equipment will help Cote D'Ivoire expand
the country's existing telecommunications network, as well
as implement new networks, as specified by the Ivory
Coast Government's development plan.

Lucent will supply its TDMA (Time Division Multiple
Access)-based IRT (Integrated Radio
Telecommunications) wireless access system, combined
with the DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless
Telecommunications) option, comprising both the
backbone infrastructure and the "last mile" access to the
subscribers' premises. Lucent's IRT-DECT systems
connect subscribers to the public telephone network by
radio, thus avoiding the costs and installation time
associated with wired systems. Lucent's IRT-DECT
point-to-multipoint radio system, which utilizes TDMA
technology, can support all telecommunications services
in rural and suburban areas. IRT systems are field-proven
and now operating in 70 countries worldwide.

Installation will start within the next few weeks, both for
expansion of the existing network and implementation of
new networks. Lucent will partner with a local company to
install the networks and will transfer the necessary
competencies and know-how to Cote d'Ivoire to ensure the
smooth deployment of the systems.

Cote d'Ivoire Telecom is the national operator in the Ivory
Coast. It is 5I percent owned by the French operator
France Telecom/FCR.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, New
Jersey, U.S., designs, builds and delivers a wide range of
public and private networks, communications systems and
software, data networking systems, business telephone
systems and microelectronics components. Bell
Laboratories is Lucent's research and development arm.

California provider lights up ADSL network ahead of schedule

[[From Americas Network Magazine:

By David Kopf

Orconet, an Orange and San Jose, Calif.-based service provider has lit up
asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) service for Southern California's
Los Angeles and Orange counties earlier than expected.

"We are the first company to offer this service in Los Angeles and Orange
counties," says John Leon, Orconet's network development officer. "The
service has been available in parts of Pasadena and North Hollywood for a
couple weeks, but as of today, it is available through most of Orange and Los
Angeles counties. We expect to be offering our high-speed connectivity to
many more counties throughout California by the end of the month."

Orconet's ADSL service is offered in two tiers; 384 kbps upstream /384 kbps
downstream, or 384 kbps upstream/1.5 Mbps downstream. The service
provider's backbone users packet over Sonet technology and asynchronous
transfer mode (ATM). Also, Orconet uses a border gateway protocol (BGP)
to optimize routes across multiple independent Internet protocol (IP)
backbones to provide shortest-path routing for its Internet traffic.
