orthovisc vs. synvisc clinical advantages !!!!Shoota_69 Jul 14 1998...from yahoo 5:25PM EDTTo all,Sorry to have been away but I think I have come up with some excellent clinical information .JetsonB is right at $6.00Anika will take a significant chunk of the US market because it is clinically a better product .It is doing very well in Canada and in other parts of the world where it is available.I have researched this information through various sources like reviewing studies, talking to Ortho Drs, and patients who have been treated with Synvisc.Synvisc has really had the market to itself it has experienced a 7.2% rate of negative patient side effects. Advertising claims of pain relief up to 8.4 months may be misleading. Drs. will view this rate of complications as high and there are no significant studies that support Synvisc claim of time of pain relief.1) Pain may be caused by high molecular weight of Synvisc and by products used in its manufacturing that are not tolerated well by the body. Synvisc is manufactured by a cross linking process that use formaldehyde in a controlled enviroment to create a protein bond between the polysaccharide chains. The bottom line is Anika orthovisc is a purer substance that is better tolerated by the body. Formaldehyd is a irritant to the body.2) Anika orthovisc has a molecular weight closer to the bodies synovial fluid that makes it more biocompatiable. For all you chemists this is a molecular weight of 1-2 million daltons, and a high kinematic viscosity of 35,000 centistokes.3) Anika production process is proprietary that gives Orthovisc the highest and purest concentration of HA available. To date orthovisc has not experienced any !!!!! product related difficulties with its use.4) orthovisc low protein content reduces potential for a patients inflammatory response.In conclusion Orthovisc when available will be a far superior product than Synvisc because the patient will do and feel better.Lord Stanley will live in philly !!!!Thanks to all you technical types the information has been great.
