Hitachi gets flash with 84Mb card

Japanese giant targets digi-camera market

Posted 18 June

A Compact Flash card from Hitachi will deliver large quantities of memory using an 84Mbit processor. Samples will become available in August, according to sources close to the company. The product, which uses a .35 micron process has a write speed less than .2ms and will so speed up the rate at which digital cameras can take their snaps.

That will allow Hitachi to introduce cards which deliver 10Mb and 20Mb capacities, according to the source.

When the products are released, it is likely that it will help Hitachi to stay on the top of the lucrative Compact Flash market.

Last week, it was revealed that Hitachi was getting out of the DRAM market, which has shown very poor results, with prices dropping steeply during the whole of this year.

The source was reluctant to give OEM prices for the Compact Flash cards but they are believed to be in the region of $70 and $111 for 10Mb and 20Mb cards.
