Excellent point.

>in the cache area, isn't NTAP more of a hardware based solution and INKT is more in the software area of this field?

NTAP sells a software solution, called NetCache, which is the next generation of caching based on a company they bought a couple of years ago. (I can't remember the name of the company. At the time, that company had the lion's share of the proxy serving market.) NetCache runs on UNIX and NT.

The hardware packaged version that NTAP sells has NetCache running on NTAP's file server. That combination of software preloaded on a specialized hardware package makes it an "appliance". Take a look at an earlier post describing the relative growth predicted for caching software versus caching appliance solutions.

If you are really interested or are investing in NTAP, I suggest you have a look at NTAP's web page. It is very good. It is also very fast--wonder why?

Although NTAP sells packaged hardware, I believe that the bulk of their R&D investment would be in software. Like some other successful companies (CSCO for example) they can sell hardware at high margins because of the proprietary software.
