accounted for as marketing expenses instead of cost of goods sold, thereby making their
margins look better than they really are.

Amazon has the most misleading accounting I have ever seen. Virtually all expenses are thrown into market. The commissions are in marketing as in the labor for fulfilling an order, the janitors salaries, the discount on charge cards to the banks, light bulbs, electric bills, phone bills, etc. Amazon wants the public to believe their lack of profit is strictly due to their marketing costs to make a name. If their accounting was done correctly, one could remove all market expenses and Amazon would still be losing money.
