Technically these parts function as well as a new one. However they can not be sold as new - Packard-Bell got sued over that practice a few years ago. Since the volume of parts generated in this way exceeds the number needed for field repairs (where it is apparently OK to use used parts), the result is a supply of parts which are electricly good business but can not be used in new systems. Where do they go? Out into the used parts market at about 25% of the new part value.

That's why I call systems using these parts 'gray box' rather than 'white box'. They are about as reliable as the white box but the pedigree is a little more suspect.
