Christine, I'm not technically qualified to grade Spectran's technical roadmap, but it seems to me that a little player has to target a niche to keep from getting stepped on by the giant Cornings and Lucents in the core products area (such as mono-mode fiber). The Asian meltdown has already impacted Spectran (and the entire fiber market), but Asia seems to be stabilizing and may well turn around later in the year. IMHO, the key is Spectan's management and technical team. It's been a turbulent period for them, and the jury is still out.

The current downside risk should be minimal, since they are trading close to their book value of just under $6.00. But these guys are sure out of favor. It'll take a seriously good earnings report or two to turn the negative perceptions around. Didn't Buffett say to buy when optimism was at it's lowest? SPTR sure qualifies.

btw, having Ted Kennedy attend the ribbon cutting doesn't encourage me too much; he'd probably go anywhere for a free lunch and an honorarium.
