I've spent the last few days looking at the technical aspects of Online Merchant and comparing it to HMAPPS. I think that a comparison of Online Merchant and HMAPPS is a little like comparing apples and oranges. In fact it seems that Online Merchant may end up competing with HMAPPS for users

From stumpworld.com
Online Merchant produces a full-featured Web storefront that works on most ISP's servers, with only CGI scripts required...

HMAPPS uses the Miva mia engine and provides an XML interface to ODBC databases or text files. CGI does not come into play at all.

It seems to me that pursuing the CGI method of a shopping basket flies in the face of the XML initiatives that are sweeping the web. Moreover a significant percentage of users will be UNABLE to use Online Merchant with their current ISP's AOL for instance does not give its users CGI access to their websites. I can't tell for certain, but I don't think that a user can build an HMAPPS enabled page and integrate it with Online Merchant. I do know that an HMAPPS enabled site can refer to Online Merchant so this may not be an issue.

I think that the concept of Online Merchant is a fantastic one, but am concerned that Alpha is competing with the rest of Softquad on this. What is the opinion of the other readers of this thread?
