Dale,

Only damned if they didn't.

No, I think both scenarios are losing scenarios. Sure Intel can maintain dominance using the current strategy, but if the net result is the commoditization of the x86 CPU then who wins.. no one. There is no reason to believe that AMD will find support to survive, true.. there is also no reason to believe that AMD will not find it. I mean stranger things have happened. Hell Warren Buffet might decide HE wants to run an x86 company ;-)..

Maybe Paul Allen will do it.. lord know he has enough cash to buy every single outstanding AMD share!

My point is this won't stop. As you said the more AMD makes in terms of CPUs the more Intel will cut prices. Don't you remember the exact same thing started happening 4 years ago for DRAM. Lucrative business. Everyone piled on.. capacity out the arse and prices in the can.. well look it's happening again.

I fully agree you though, and I understand what you are saying about Jerry & company. He used the Netscape approach "we will kill windows". Well we know what happened.

Except that Intel never tried to buy AMD (to my knowledge)... but still yes, that is basically my point. Instead of making money and then trying to kill Intel by offering a higher performance alternative when they had lots of cash to do it properly, he went at them from day 1. I admire his persistance, but not much else.

Nice analogy, but INTC has now been inoculated. Investors have accepted lower margins.

Have they though.. and how low are you willing to accept.. 10%? 20%.. give me a number.. because as Stockman is so happy to remind everyone on any thread that isn't Intel.. things can just keep falling.

As stockman would say "party's over dudes" for AMD.

As perverse as this sounds I think it is just the begining for AMD. I can see Jerry getting the big ass boot. Then AMD will stand a chance. Don't count her out.. She has been in coma's and recovered!..

"Never discount a foe until you have seen their dead body with your own eyes.."

..some very wise advice if you ask me.

And as for Rise, IDT etc.. No way the party will never even begin for those guys.

Again see above. The good news is that (for you and fellow Intel investors).. there is at least 1 more GUARANTEED year of Intel dominance.. I won't go beyond a year cause I ain't god.. but for now they are firmly in control.

If Intel was smart they would slow the price cuts for a while. Intel doesn't want AMD to go out of business. If they do and Intel is the sole large maker of x86 CPU the DOJ will _FORCE_ Intel to spin off everything but CPU development so that they can't "bully" box makers into using their video cards, motherboards etc.. that would hurt even more than AMD selling 5M CPUs a q.
