>>I believe that Leland openly announcing that selling the company is a viable option is a major sign of weakness. <<

You are right, Unless it was already a done deal.

But first and formost, no matter what, he got some ideas on how to deal with things as a small company than let his ego rule like before. Even if neither option 1 or 2 happen, they can now still make enough money to survive till other products can be developed.

VLAD: I believe someone on this thread has stated the VVUS will not entertain a buyout at this stock level. Their thinking apparently is that the comp is worth more than current price giving them little leverage at present time. Therefore the only possible answer is a partner. Also, another factor that give the "partner an advantage is: they can test the waters 1. see were the mkt will take muse with a professional marketing approach...2. Use their influence with HMO's to encourage scripts of muse as an alternative to "V" 3.Not having to invest large sums of money until they have determined muse is a true competitor of "V". To "K" I believe your incorrect in that certainly any drug in development cannot predict it's mkt acceptence until actual sales, also VVUS has other drugs in clinical trials as well as in research that could easily provide growth 5-10 years out. Lets also not forget "V" side effects have not exactly been encouraging, leaving many possible scenarios regarding it's future.

BigK,
Unfortunately, I am inclined to agree with you, but to a lesser extent. I don't know if he is worried about the future of VVUS, his future, or the current price of the stock. It is possible he just wants to cash his chips in and be done with it without tarnishing his reputation. Of course, the board would have to agree to this. But given the current stock price, if they could get an offer at a price substatially higher than it is now, I think they probably would take it. I am sure this hasn't exactly been a picnic for them, either. I don't know what his motivation was, but it is not often you here companies discuss buyouts before they are made.
On the flip side, he didn't say anything we all didn't know already. They are a small fish playing with sharks. It is very common for these startups to build to a point and then sell to a bigger player. It is one thing to be a small fish in a pond by yourself, but when the sharks are attacking, you need a friend.

I don't know exactly what to make of it. I just know it feels weak. The good news is when dealing with Wilson, you never know if he is acurately conveying the message he intends to.

The saga continues,
Colby
