You are creating a conflict where none exists.

"The external HiFD drive can be connected with a PCMCIA card or with the parallel port on the user's PC. The internal model shown at the Tokyo trade show used an ATAPI interface, although Sony may instead use a SCSI interface. Universal serial bus (USB) and IEEE 1394 standards also are being considered."

Sony is obviously intent on making ATAPI's first, and then is weighing the decision of producing a "SCSI Insider" HiFi. The ATAPI for PC's, and SCSI for Macs. Again, where's the conflict?

"The price of the HiFD drive is not yet decided, but it will likely be set at a level to compete against rival products."

Would you agree that setting a firm retail price before production would put Sony at a disadvantage, allowing Iomega to make pre-emptive adjustments in their pricing? I see no conflict, just straight ahead strategic non-disclosure on Sony's part.

"Because the HiFD drive is intended to replace the conventional floppy disk drive, Sony will concentrate on promoting the internal model and not the external HiFD drive."

>>Hay wait a minute didn't they just say that they would be shipping both this fall. Is this strong conviction or what. Why even bother if you don't plan to promote. A little indecisive ?<<

Again, no conflict. Sony is shipping both internals and externals, but is concentrating promotion on the internals. Hey...Isn't Iomega trying to do the same thing now?

I believe your observations regarding Sony's "indecisions" are actually hopes and desires. Rest assured, Sony is coming- and in a big way. Many people on Usenet can't wait. They are sick and tired of Iomega's "crap."

Any thoughts on K.E.'s apparently holding on to some 2,561,000 shares
13-Apr-98 EDWARDS KIM Exercised 2,561,000

Just a thought on Sony's lead man that IOM had recently hired on.

This guy was not a light weight player, he was in charge of Sony's
HiFD project, thus IOM knows for a certainty the status of HiFD.
The cat's out of the bag and Sony knows it. I think that's why
we saw this ambiguous report from Japan

By watching what IOM does we will know how far along HiFD is.
My bet after reading what I perceive as disarray in the Sony
camp that we will continue to see a measured decline of costs
associated with Zip with corresponding reductions in wholesale
prices.
