SKYSTREAM COMPLETES SECOND ROUND OF FUNDING WITH FIVE MILLION DOLLARS FROM INDUSTRY LEADING TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENT FIRMS

IVP and Mayfield Fund Demonstrate Vote of Confidence in SkyStream

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - March 26, 1998 - SkyStream Corporation announced today that it has secured $5 million in new funding from two leading global technology investment firms. The new investments made by Institutional Venture Partners (IVP) and Mayfield Fund complete SkyStream's second round of funding. In February 1997, SkyStream received an initial investment of $4.4 million, also from IVP and Mayfield.

Now if this is all it takes to start a new enterprise I think CUBE would be smart to use 10% of its capital just like this and fund a strategic new enterprise or two and see which ones grow to bear fruit!
Spin out some of that talent at CUBE, yet keep a finger in.

New Codecs Enable MPEG-2 Editing For PCs
(07/13/98; 7:38 p.m. ET)
By Kristen Kenedy, Computer Reseller News
Ligos Technology announced new codecs Monday that let PC users capture and edit MPEG-2 images.

The codecs, called GoMotion, are designed for use with high-end, Intel Pentium II systems that contain Intel740 graphics cards, company officials said. Codecs are small software routines, and Ligos' new additions let users perform digital media recording, videoconferencing, and video editing without costly hardware add-in boards.

Codecs currently exist that enable video manipulation in software, but those do not support high-quality MPEG-2 video.

"GoMotion will set free a market encumbered by expensive digital video hardware. Because Ligos' codecs are completely MPEG-2 compliant, they will affect a broad range of markets, including broadcast media, professional, corporate, and consumer," said Richard Coward, vice president of engineering at Ligos.

Tests of the GoMotion codecs with current MMX technology have demonstrated real-time performance at 352x240 resolution on a 400-MHz Pentium II processor platform with the Intel740 graphics chip, according to the company. The codecs will be made available as a Microsoft DirectShow component, providing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) a method to integrate these new capabilities into their own systems and applications, company officials said.

Ligos has a patent pending on the technology. The company is currently licensing the GoMotion codecs and is holding demonstrations next week at Siggraph, an computer graphics and video trade show in Orlando, Fla.

Ligos Technology, a multimedia solutions developer, provides OEM technology and applications for digital media recording and navigation. Headquartered in San Francisco, Ligos is a wholly owned subsidiary of Integrated Data Systems, Savannah, Ga.

CWC ACQUIRES LEADING INTERACTIVE PROGRAMMER

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cable & Wireless Communications has acquired 50.1% of Two Way TV for 13 million pounds in a deal which enlarges the equity base of the interactive TV provider.
The investment is linked to a Supply and Distribution Agreement under which CWC will offer Two Way TV services to its customers as part of its new digital interactive service. It also hopes to distribute Two Way TV services to other cable and to digital terrestrial operators.
Two Way TV was launched five years ago. It produces a range of interactive TV services which extend existing terrestrial programmes, including 'participation' in quiz and game shows, and in sports programming. It also offers stand-alone games independent of real time TV programming. The present system uses data in the broadcast TV signal, overlays information on the TV screen, has its own dedicated hand control unit, and connects to Two Way TV's control centre by telephone.
Two Way TV will use the new investment to develop its portfolio of digital TV services for cable.

CWC has confirmed that its digital TV service will offer:

choice of up to 200 channels
wide choice of movies and programmes 'on demand'
Electronic Programme Guides
television based Internet access
interactive services including interactive entertainment, education, information, home shopping and banking
