Perhaps we will learn more about RDRT's GMR program during the CC on 7/15/98

8:27PM EDTThanks cpamarty for "reprinting" NasdaqStuds SI thread. If what he says is true, It is very significant to RR investors.

I can share my personal experience with Mark Re. Ive known him since his grad school days at CMU ('86) where he developed a reputation for technical brilliance. At IBM he and his colleagues accomplished what I think was a near miracle over the next 12 years. IBM at that time was a giant wasteful behemoth, with politics and pointless R+D. Consider that IBM had invented the winchester (hard) drive and the MR head back in the 70s but failed to capitalize on it in the pc market. Mark has a rare combination of technical brilliance with excellent people skills and a profound desire to succeed in business (honestly). He played a crucial role to put ibm where it is today in the disk and head marketplace. And he did this while having to put up with a lot of people who really didnt care about ibm or him for that matter and had lots of time on their hands to do harm. Sound familiar?

I agree with the stud about RR's prospects. As I stated in a previous post my only concern with RR is politics. There are certain positions that are very weak both technically and otherwise(dont want to attack anybody) and too much management redundancy. If any person can cut thru it, it is MRe. IF If NasdaqStud is right, this is truly an excellent sign for investors. Just my opinion.

There has been a rash of manager types leaving ibm and joining WDC, APM and RDRT, but IMO RDRT got the best (only?) guy not just to bring in GMR, solve tech issues and make it profitable manufacturing, but also to get people working together as a team.
I am probably being overzealous in my praise so I will balance it with a negative: his ponytail is too long and makes him look goofy.

I hope an SIer can forward this post to the stud, since I am not a member there (money principle).

RR had no "previous" technology before ITF, that was its first product. APM and others had ferrite. RR made a brief and very unsuccessfuly soire into "planar" TF heads, before diving into mr.
