Barb, I guess the question is will they let you write checks against available cash balance, or real cash balance?

Assume you have $10000 account equity, and hold no positions. Should Datek let you write checks for beyond $10000?

I think its reasonable to expect a broker to allow checks against real cash balance. I am virtually certain this is Discover's and Fidelity's policy, but I will call them on Monday to verify this and post here.

It is an interesting question though. With Datek's wacky accounting, one might have to be careful. Of course this assumes check writing ever becomes real...
