I think you underestimate the sophistication of individual stock pickers today. Yes, some still listen to analysts and brokers, but an increasing number of investors are 1) more educated about investing, 2) less trusting of people in the investment business, and 3) more concerned about their ability to fund their retirements. Those who aren't pour their money into mutual funds and are at the mercy of a fund manager, not always a bad thing. MOT didn't drag the techs down the other day. Actually, YHOO's positive surprise slowed the speculation more than bad surprises elsewhere. AMAT might be a small drag, but to blame one item of news for market turndowns is like wearing blinders. U.S. integration into the world economy introduces so many new factors that nobody has really been able to invent a formula to capture all the information. Not too many formulas worked in the previous era. Stocks go up and down for any number of reasons. I wish I knew the answers. I, for one, lend little to no credence to analyst or broker recommendations. Their guess is as good as mine, so I'll stick with mine.
