I actually believe that there is another ... (3) in a hybrid box, inside the home, that might be a PC or act like a PC, that will provide PC-to-PC VoIP *and* bridge VoIP to the existing home wiring infrastructure.

What I am working towards is a way to have an IP-only (wireless) connection to my house. This actually could be DSL or cable modem also. Then to have a box at home that could receive VoIP calls, and bridge them into my existing house wiring. This would require the connection to be at the outside wall or at the main connection to the house wiring. When I pick up a house phone, the "hybrid" box will have to be able to provide dial-tone, take the dialed number, and contact a gateway on the Internet (H.323?) and connect. But I could also go to my PC and call someone like I do today with VoIP softphones.

My initial feelings are that this could be a USB peripheral for existing PCs. I'm actually experimenting right now with a US Robotics 56k voice modem for part of this. It won't generate dial-tone, 48v, or ring ... but it allows me to test bridging between VoIP and my home phone line ...

I agree that there is going to have to be a bridge to existing home phones for this to be successful ...
