The problems of the outside of the home are significant, and the problems of VoIP through the PC are not easily dismissed. I have seen a demonstration of VoIP PC to PC and the feed had synchronicity problems of herky-jerky distortion. The majority of installed base of PCs are mute. They need audio equipment upgrade. If you take the telephony component off the cable, it still has to have a device to detect it for the handpiece. You couldn't splice into the cable an RJ11 and expect my phone to interpret it and you can't transform what my phone could interpret at the node and send it through the cable. There has to be hardware in the home that has yet to be installed. If the hardware goes into the PC, the telephone could be plugged into the PC or otherwise the hardware has to be incorporated on or in the building. Seems like an elementary undertaking, but the experience of HFC upgrade has taught that the crazy quilt of an industry controlled by government with the intent of protecting people, will not easily be reknitted.

Frank, I have read elsewhere that nothing like that is close, only 60% of TCI's network is fiber to the headend,I am almost positive,Malone said this himself. I believe only 3% on the plant is fiber to the node, and none is FTTC. This is misleading, poor information. TCI stopped upgrading their plant before they even started in 1996,they have nothing close to the other competitors.
But I may be wrong, sorry I am on a rant here.
