Bill, consider yourself blessed that you only caught fragments
of the Pollan show. "Uncle" Steve formerly held a regular spot
on CNBC-TV where he fielded personal finance questions and
others. These were short segments and his avuncular, overly
ingratiating, syrupy style was tolerable only for its brevity.
In any case, his advice on practical matters regarding credit
card debt, bankruptcy, defective merchandise, home mortgages,
buying appliances, kitchen remodeling, college tuition financing,
warranty repairs, consumer rights, tenant laws, et cetera often
times was quite useful. To be sure, syrup does not make for a
supper, and Uncle Steve's candied style for three hours is quite
difficult to digest. Besides, Bruce Williams, host of the longest
running call-in radio show of its kind, does a far better job at
guiding the uninitiated and experienced alike through life's sundry
practical difficulties, in my opinion. Above all, Brinker is the
master of the markets and a savant. However, Pollan seems
decidedly out of his element in this wise, in my view.
