Turkish Cypriot State Approves Sale Of Viagra
July 13, 1998 12:12 PM

NICOSIA (AP)--The self-declared Turkish Cypriot
state announced Monday it has approved the sale of the
male potency pill Viagra, saying there was "intense
demand" for the drug.

"Viagra, which is on the world's agenda, has attracted a
lot of demand in the Turkish Republic of Northern
Cyprus," said Ertugrul Hasipoglu, who serves as health
minister in the breakaway northern third of the divided
island.

He said a prescription would be required and that
import and sales would be conducted under the
ministry's strict control.

Viagra, produced by Pfizer Inc (PFE), can legally be
bought in only a few European nations. Turkey, on
which the Turkish Cypriots rely heavily on for trade, has
not yet licensed the drug, whose side effects include an
incompatibility with some heart drugs.

In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration is
looking into the cases of 31 men who died after
reportedly taking the drug.
