Thinking Rationally as Internet Stocks Go Wild

t was a wild week on Wall Street for Internet stocks. But because many of these fledgling companies may be years away from
actually making money, the sight of their stocks skyrocketing one day and plummeting the next is enough to make investors wonder
if the Internet is paved with gold or just a high-technology version of the tulip craze.

There is not much doubt that people who have been riding the wave this year have done well. The Interactive Week Internet Index, a
group of 50 companies, has risen 46 percent this year. After hitting a record last Monday, the index retreated but still ended the week
up 1 percent.

Internet stocks have been good for managers like Paul Cook, a former director of information technology at
Munder Capital Management in Birmingham, Mich., who now runs the Munder NetNet fund, which invests
in companies engaged in research, design, development and manufacturing related to the Internet.

Q. Your opinion on Amazon.com?

A. I own Amazon. I used to be overweight in the stock. Now I am underweight. But I think they have a real opportunity to leverage
their brand to sell not only books and CD's but cigars and wine, to become the supermarket of the Internet.
