ULTRACOM Taps DiviCom for INTELSAT Earth Station;Puerto Rican Voice Traffic Carrier
Leverages DiviCom CompressionTechnology for Expansion Into Broadcast-Quality Video

July 13, 1998 08:00 AM

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 13, 1998--DiviCom Inc. CUBE , a leading provider of
digital video networking solutions for broadcast, today announced that ULTRACOM selected
DiviCom to supply equipment for its INTELSAT Earth station.

Based in Puerto Rico, ULTRACOM is now providing broadcast-quality video delivery services
beyond the voice traffic capabilities previously offered. DiviCom affiliate Comlink served as
integrator for the project.

According to Pedro Delgado, ULTRACOM's operations and engineering manager, "We realized we
had to work with a vendor capable of supplying us with reliable, standards-based equipment.
When we contracted with Comlink for our turnkey project we knew it would be implemented with
DiviCom equipment." Delgado added that by using digital equipment, it would become possible for
ULTRACOM to get additional channels over the transponder that the organization leases from
INTELSAT.

The contract called for the installation of a 4.6-meter Ku-band antenna and transmission
equipment for ULTRACOM's teleport in Humacao, for domestic and international use, as well as
its Campo Rico Earth Station.

"DiviCom not only completed the project on schedule," stated Delgado, "but it also met the
training deadlines with our technicians." Delgado pointed out that the Campo Rico equipment is
already being used for to broadcasting horse races and special religious and TV events. Delgado
indicated that pay-per-view is in ULTRACOM's future plans.

The ULTRACOM system consists of DiviCom's MV10 broadcast-quality encoders, MN20
multiplexers and SC20 system controllers. All the equipment installed is
MPEG-2/DVB-compliant. Choosing standards-based equipment makes it easier for the
installation to grow as its requirements expand.

Tom Lookabaugh, president of DiviCom Inc., indicated that some of the challenges met by
DiviCom system engineers lay in complying with the stringent standards and performance
requirements of an operational INTELSAT Earth station.

"It is by the successful completion of projects such as this one that DiviCom continuously
demonstrates its commitment to global standards and true interoperability," he pointed out. "This
is a first for us: a Latin-America-region INTELSAT station choosing DiviCom equipment for its
video delivery services."

"DiviCom has given us capabilities we did not previously possess," pointed Delgado. "We are now
truly the bridge to the Americas -- we connect the U.S. with Latin America and vice-versa, and are
able to offer complete carrier services."

KTVU-Oakland Becomes Latest Network Affiliate to Purchase NDS High Definition Encoder Gear; Fox Affiliate Prepares for November HDTV Launch with 720p/60 Encoding System
Business Wire - July 13, 1998 13:57
Jump to first matched term

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 13, 1998--NDS Americas Inc., a leading provider of end-to-end digital broadcasting solutions, today announced it has won another in a series of ATSC encoder contracts.

KTVU-Oakland, a Fox affiliate owned by Cox Broadcasting Inc., is the most recent television station to purchase NDS' high definition encoding system. The encoder contract is the first awarded to NDS by a Cox Broadcasting television station and the first for a Fox affiliate. The high definition encoder will be delivered to KTVU in time to meet its targeted November on air date. The complete encoding system includes the NDS E5810 HDTV encoder, StreamServer PCpro management system, and a microwave DS-3 interface for the Studio Transmitter Link (STL).

NDS continues to expand upon its recent ATSC product introduction success at the NAB conference and exhibition. One of the few companies who demonstrated working ATSC-compliant high-definition encoder systems, NDS has since become a preferred vendor among television station broadcasters due to product availability, compression quality, system design flexibility and competitive pricing schemes.

"The NDS high definition encoding system enables KTVU to offer our audience a high-performance HDTV product today with the flexibility to add revenue generating, value-added multicasting, data and interactive services as digital broadcasting matures," said Ken Manley, Engineering Manager for KTVU. "I, along with Sterling Davis, Director of Operations, also wanted to select a vendor who could deliver a complete end-to-end ATSC high definition solution, and our extensive search led us to NDS." Davis has since been promoted to the role of Vice President of Engineering for Cox Broadcasting Inc. in Atlanta.
