WavePhore CEO: Co. Has Potential Audience Of 100M !!!

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--WavePhore Inc. (WAVO) Chief Executive David Deeds said based on a partnership agreement and its delivery system, the company can potentially reach 100 million households.

"Because of our partnership with PBS we're able to reach 99% of the homes in the U.S., and that means ultimately we've got an opportunity to transmit data to 100 million homes in the U.S.," Deeds said in an interview on CNBC Monday morning.

"We're taking what we call 'the best of the net'
and having also some proprietary information sent down - and it's done in a broadcast mode instead of an Internet mode because its a point-to-multipoint delivery method," he said. "That way we can send a tremendous amount of content down to the whole viewing audience."

He said only a small amount of equipment is necessary to run the service.

"All you need to have in order to receive this is a TV tuner board in your PC as well as our software," Deeds said. "Our software is available by download off of our website, and it's one of the featured new items in Windows '98."

WavePhore, which provides broadcasting equipment and services to news and data providers such as this newswire and the Associated Press, is made up of three units: WavePhore Networks, WavePhore Newscast and WavePhore WaveTop.

Microsoft owns a 3.5% stake in WavePhore while Intel owns 2.94%. The company's shares rose more than 30% Friday after a BusinessWeek article stated Microsoft is going to increase its stake in WavePhore.

I agree with John. I've been involved in technology for the better part of 15 years and it took me a long time to understand what WavePhore's product actually is; even after getting the annual report (maybe I'm just a little slow).

I thought it was very interesting how Deeds, on CNBC, was going out of his way this morning to say that WaveTop is NOT an internet product and that it's a TV product, using technology that been around for a long time.

I also found it amusing that Deeds is about as interesting as tofu and has really bad taste in ties.

FWIW, I have no stake, long or short in WAVO.

- Rob
