Tolly Group Touts VIVID Switched Routing Solution as Easy to
Configure, Use and Manage

HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 13, 1998--Newbridge (TSE:NNC - news; NYSE:NN - news)
MPOA-Based System Reduces Burdens on Enterprise Network Administrators, Independent Testing Organization
Confirms

Newbridge Networks today announced that The Tolly Group, the prestigious consulting and independent testing
organization, has cited the Newbridge(r) VIVID(tm) switched routing solution for its ease of setup, use and
management. Tolly Group engineers evaluated a live installation, configuration and demonstration of the
high-performance, MultiProtocol-Over-ATM (MPOA)-based VIVID system.

''Our tests demonstrated that the VIVID system's installation and management features considerably reduced the time
and effort needed to deploy an Ethernet and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) campus network,'' said Kevin Tolly,
president of The Tolly Group. ''This was accomplished by connecting automatically to a System Manager station and
auto-configuring with minimum parameters required for a basic network.''

Plug-and-play, MPOA-based management is responsible for the VIVID switched routing solution's ease factor. As
switches and edge devices are connected to the network, they are automatically and immediately entered into an MPOA
domain. Network-administrator intervention is required in only the final step: the configuration of subnets and virtual
networks through an intuitive, point-and-click graphical user interface.

''We were highly impressed with the simplicity of the entire process. In fact, the evaluation took only one and a half
days, instead of the expected three,'' said Kevin Tolly. ''Clearly, the VIVID system was designed with the enterprise
network administrator in mind. Newbridge customers have roundly touted the ease of configuring and managing the
VIVID switched routing solution, particularly the manner in which subnets and virtual networks are created. It's easy
to see why.''

The network evaluated by the Tolly Group included:

CS1000 and CS3000 ATM switches;
Yellow Ridge(tm) and Orange Ridge(tm) edge devices, which convert Ethernet and Fast Ethernet traffic into
ATM cells;
Route Servers(tm), which collect and maintain network-wide addressing information and distribute it to edge
devices and ATM-enabled Network Interface Cards (NICs); and
NetDirector(r) management software, which proactively manages both the physical network and the services
and applications traversing it.

''The Tolly Group's recognition validates our efforts to construct the VIVID switched routing solution as a
user-friendly system,'' said Jeff Kunst, Manager, Consulting Engineering at Newbridge Networks. ''Enterprise
network users are more sophisticated, more diverse in their application needs and more geographically dispersed;
consequently, the demands on network administrators have intensified. They have neither the time nor the resources to
accept a clumsy, complex system.''

The VIVID family of high-performance local area network (LAN) internetworking products delivers a powerful
solution to meet the demands of today's enterprise network environments. With highly scalable, wire-speed routing
capability, VIVID products are ideal for meeting the performance requirements for high-speed LAN, multimedia and
intranet applications. Based on the MPOA standard, the VIVID switched routing solution eliminates the performance
bottlenecks and management complexity of conventional router network designs. VIVID products also enable
extensive virtual networking capabilities, allowing customers to define policies for governing user behavior and
enhancing application performance.
