(TCI) is preparing to enhance Chicago's lodging industry with the competitive advantages of interactive television services. The cable television provider has selected SeaChange International, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: SEAC) GuestServe Network system as the platform by which it will provide hotels with a range of high- quality guest services such as video-on-demand (VOD), PC games and Internet access. TCI has over 40,000 hotel rooms within reach in downtown Chicago, where the operator's local franchise already leads the residential cable subscription market. "Interactive services are the future of cable television and we have the opportunity to cost-effectively showcase these capabilities in the lodging industry today," said Steve White, regional vice president for the TCI Chicago Region. "With our industry expertise and existing network investment, we can enable hotels to offer advanced television services that will generate new revenues from guests." TCI's hotel offering will leverage a state-of-the-art redundant fiber optic ring surrounding Chicago, bringing high-bandwidth services from its facilities directly to hotels. True VOD and other interactive applications will originate from SeaChange's GuestServe video server system in the new TCI headend dedicated to serving hotel customers. With SeaChange's MediaCluster technology, the GuestServe Network System can store huge selections of high- quality digitized movies and scale upwards to support the addition of new hotels on the network. TCI will centrally manage the interactive services, freeing hoteliers from the burden of tape-based pay-per-view systems on their premises. Hotels will only work with a single vendor from installation right up to when the revenue stream is turned on. "Competition for guests among metropolitan hotels can be fierce. With GuestServe, TCI will help its lodging customers use interactive TV to infuse the guest experience with excitement and convenience, and gain a competitive edge over hotels down the block," said Bill Styslinger, president and CEO, SeaChange International.
