DVD-recordables don't take off until the consumer finds them irresistible .............................. techweb.com July 13, 1998, Issue: 1016 Section: Systems & Software -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pentium II, Win 98 could trigger market surge; DVD-RAM seen lagging -- DVD-ROM's time is at hand, says Toshiba exec Junko Yoshida Tokyo - Demand for DVD-ROM drives will finally kick into high gear, thanks to surging volumes of Intel Corp.'s Pentium II and the debut Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 98, according to Koji Hase, general manager of Toshiba's DVD division."The fourth quarter of this year is when we'll really start seeing a big jump in DVD-ROM drives in the PC market," he predicted. However, Hase believes that writable DVD-RAMs will grow more slowly than anticipated, both for PC and consumer applications. "We've become much more careful about predicting this rewritable market," he said. The biggest issue is not so much format, where the market is seeing a variety of incompatible rewritable systems, but applications, Hase stressed. The industry needs to identify the irresistible applications for DVD-RAMs, and then sell them to PC users.
