"The stocks that are doing well are the ones that we know have earnings," said Arthur Hogan, chief market analyst at Jefferies & Co. "So you have stocks like Microsoft and Intel doing well here.

Hogan is more sanguine on the outlook for technology stocks, particularly personal computer makers.

"In technology, average selling prices on computers are going up and people are willing to pay a little bit more for a PC upgrade than at this time last year," he said, noting that "a lot of computer hardware makers have cleared their backlog of inventory."
