Earnings Plays for newbies... By the way for newcomers to this thread, subscribers and e-mailers to me please take the earnings play watch list marketgems.com and check the list with historical price charts. That way you can get a very idea how these companies began their surge before earnings. RMBS was a late bloomer but all the others did well in 'anticipation' of a good earnings report. SWY, DLJ and some others crept up steadily day by day. After you've checked out the plays get the new earnings play watch list for this week and next week (july 13 through July 24) and chart the list against historical price patterns of the companies. Lots of them are already poised for breakout. Remember as the case for NSOL and some others that in the case of earnings plays "FUNDAMENTAL ANALYSIS" outweighs technical analysis. This DOES NOT mean that you should not use technical analysis. Actually it is important to use TA to determine if the plays are OVERBOUGHT as HBOC was this afternoon before its report. I expect it to rebound after a small pullback. I use TA for entry/exit points but I will delay my exit points until the upward price trend is broken. It will be important to watch the internet sector in the next 5-10 days as companies like ATHM,MSPG and ELNK will be reporting. MSPG is expecting a profit and I'm expecting to get back into the sector tomorrow. I'm still holding NSOL but have sold ELNK.
