Question: Will institutional buying ALWAYS show as big block trades? I was thinking about a scenario in which an institution wants to accumulate a stock of which the majority of shares are held by individual investors and no other institutional holders are selling.

For example, Fund XYZ want to accumulate 500K shares of ABC stock, but nobody is willing or able to sell them full 500K shares. So the fund buys from individual shareholders (perhaps enticing them to sell by gradually increasing the bid). Eventually they get their 500K shares. Will this show up on the ticker as one 500K trade or many smaller trades?

Honest (not baited) question,
