jeff here is some info on our LU Monday July 13, 5:58 pm Eastern Time Lucent , ECI Telecom in WDM deal TEL AVIV, July 13 (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group and Israel's ECI Telecom (ECILF - news) on Monday entered a three-year development and purchasing agreement, the companies said in a statement. The deal covers the supply of optical components to ECI Telecom and the development of transmitter modules for the Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) systems market. WDM is a technology enabling providers of communications systems to maximise bandwidth capability in fibre optic cables. Under the agreement, Lucent will supply laser diodes to ECI to develop and integrate into 1.5 micron digital feedback modules to be used in WDM systems. ECI Telecom will develop, manufacture and supply the modules for Lucent to sell worldwide. Lucent's Marketing and Sales Director Europe Victor Hrovat said ECI Telecom could make the transmitter modules 15 percent cheaper than Lucent itself. He valued the three-year contract at $10 million. Lucent's Microelectronics Group designs and manufactures integrated circuits and optoelectronic components for the computer and communications industrimarket by increasing our presence here,'' he said. Lucent Technologies Inc said last week that it would acquire Israeli data networking supplier LANNET for $117 million. ''The reason for such a large interest in Israel is that it has become the Silicon Valley of Europe. The market itself is unimportant because it is small, but through its developments here, Israel is a gateway to other markets,'' Hrovat said. He said Lucent was looking at other acquisitions in Israel, but did not elaborate. He said Lucent holds some 10 percent of the Israeli microelectronics market.
