Some interesting commentary. I couldn't help but notice a possible error that may give the article a biased tilt. I wonder how many US troops realize what they've signed on for. Do they remember it was the Saudis who led the 1973 oil embargo against the US?

I was too young to fully follow what was going on at the time, but I have strong recollections about my father (an engineer for a refining company) reviling the "Arabs" for years after the oil crisis--only to feel compelled to correct him when I studied that time period as a college student some years later. The books I remember said it was the Iranians (who are not Arabs) that were the movers behind the oil crisis (or crises?) of the '70s.

Also, the line that reads THE ECONOMIST, 1/14/95...is that saying the text above, below, or both is sourced there? The Economist is a very respected publication, but...what's with the date? Jan '95? Is that a typo, or is someone digging up real old stuff?
