Cabletron Expands Next-Generation SmartSwitch Family; Networking Leader Offers High-Performance, High-Port Density,Low-Cost Ethernet for its SmartSwitch Platforms July 14, 1998 07:59 AM ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 14, 1998--Cabletron Systems CS today announced two new, next-generation Ethernet SmartSwitches that offer double the capacity of its previous offerings. The new, lower-cost SmartSwitches greatly increase performance, addressing business requirements for higher network performance, capacity and dependability to support the rapid growth of the Internet and electronic commerce. Today's announcement follows Cabletron's initial May 1998 introduction of next generation SmartSwitch capabilities -- which included Fast Ethernet offerings for the SmartSwitch 6000 and 2000 with the same increase in performance, port density as well as lower price, and a Gigabit Ethernet high speed uplink for all SmartSwitch platforms. "These next generation SmartSwitches, along with the new SmartSwitch Router and forthcoming NetVantage products, give Cabletron a complete line of best-of-breed, cost-competitive switching solutions for the entire enterprise," said Esmerelda Silva, senior analyst with IDC Research, "The combination will be hard to beat." Available this month, the next generation Ethernet solutions have 48 ports of Ethernet and high speed uplink capabilities that include Gigabit Ethernet, ATM, Fast Ethernet, FDDI and WAN. The solutions include a module for Cabletron's highly-successful SmartSwitch 6000 platform, as well as a standalone SmartSwitch 2000 series version. "With the introduction of our next-generation SmartSwitch technology, Cabletron continues to make it easy and cost-effective for customers to dramatically increase network capacity," said Allen Finch, senior vice president of worldwide marketing. "Our ASIC technology allows the SmartSwitch 9000, 6000 and 2000 platforms to remain valuable investments for corporate environments."
