MCI to sell Net businesses to C&W

Compiled by CBS MarketWatch
Last Update: 07:42 AM July 14, 1998

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- MCI Communications (MCIC) has
reached an agreement to sell its Internet backbone and service businesses
to Cable & Wireless plc (CWP) for about $2 billion, The Washington
Post and The New York Times reported Tuesday. The deal, which could
be announced any day, would pave the way for U.S. antitrust approval of
WorldCom's (WCOM) $37 billion acquisition of MCI. The European
Commission had demanded that MCI divest its Internet holdings because
the combined companies would control far more than 50 percent of
worldwide Internet traffic. (The New York Times) / (The Washington
Post)
