ISLAND is an ECN which I think stands for Electronic Communicatons Network, meaning it's not a broker. If your system permits the use of island, it's a means of showing your bid or offer to the market. Of course, the pros may choose to not to deal with you for whatever reason, but the system does guarantee that your bid or offer will be represented to the market. This can be very useful if you have the sort of broker who justifies a non-fill with the argument that the "bid (or offer) never came to your price" even tho there were multiple trades at better prices. E-schwab did that to me regularly. Island or another ECN does not guarantee a fill, but it improves your chances.

If you use ABWatley, they have a button in their Ultimate Trader for Island. So does MBTrading, who are my favorites.

I think I saw a good description of Island on another thread. Will look for it and link it here if i find it.
