Quentin is the man that determines what areas are worth looking into. They use a variety of methods from my understanding. One method is to look at what surrounding properties have produced. USGS surveys are used to give them an idea also. Listening to Quentin talk, this is as much as art as it is a science: an art that develops with experience. Considering that Quentin is 74 years old and has more experience in this field than most people will ever aquire, I think he has got this form of art down pat.
I should also mention that Quentin as well as the rest of the team are extremely cautious when looking at possible acquisitions. They look at the all aspects of the acquisition and will not accept anything with a high risk ratio. Winston told me that they had refused a deal that had a 50% risk ratio involved. These guys are not going to buy a piece of property, unless there are pretty darn sure that they will make money off of it.
