I'll give a hearty "amen" to your post. My portfolio has an anchor on it too. But, I got lucky two years ago when I tripled my investment in AXC, by selling near the high. With the profits I invested mostly in tech stocks and funds, which are mostly down.

But compaq is coming back, and I finally got out two days ago with my original principal. If AXC goes below 1 15/16, I'll use that cash to buy more. I don't call it averaging down, just hedging my bet.
So even though my portfolio has been stagnant for two years now, the average works out to a 100% gain for those two years. And with AXC at less than half the price of where I originally bought it two years ago, I just have to say I love the leverage, and the odds, even more now than I did before.
I don't mind getting lucky every couple of years..... Al
