Good news and bad news after the close.

Bad news (sort of): Intel's diluted earnings were 66 cents per share versus the I/B/E/S estimate of 69 cents and First Call estimate of 68 cents. They cited weaker sales of microprocessors to personal computer makers.

Good news: DSP Communications reported better than expected sales and earnings citing strong sales of cellular telephones in Japan. Their earnings were 19 cents per share versus an I/B/E/S estimate of 18 cents and First Call estimate of 17 cents. The company also made positive comments about next quarter. Here is a quote from the company's press release.

"This reflects the continued strength in the Japanese digital cellular telephone market, as well as shipments of our CDMA, TDMA and WPBX products."

INTC has provided leadership for the SOX the past few weeks and the stock was down about $1 1/4 to 79 1/2 in after hours trading. I couldn't get a quote on DSP after hours and there's no way to tell how VLSI will react tomorrow. I just hope traders focus more on the remarks from DSP because their comment about the Japanese cellular phone market is more applicable than sales of microprocessors to PC makers.
