I think you have captured the problem surrounding the 2nd Amendment and gun ownership. I think it is clear (and not an assumption) that the 2nd Amendment aims to enable citizens to defend themselves against an oppressive government.

It has been my point all along that in this day and age, the 1st Amendment is more effective in enabling citizens to scrutinize what their government is up to.

Your points regarding the need for gun ownership are well taken, but do they need a constitutional amendment to guarantee that ownership? I'm not so sure.

I have no problem with letting the 2nd amendment stand. I have a problem with those who would use the 2nd amendment to stop laws which make gun ownership more responsible e.g. waiting periods, background checks, banning of certain classes of weapon etc.
