Matsushita-Kotobuki Sells Thin DVD-ROM Drive For Notebooks

July 14, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Matsushita-Kotobuki Electronics Industries
Ltd. put on the market a miniaturized DVD-ROM drive called SR-8171 -B,
which is only 12.7mm thick, to be built into notebook computers.
A new optical pick-up was developed to allow for a smaller and lighter
body. It has lasers for CD-ROMs and for DVD-ROMs, and both CD-R
and CD-RW can be played back on the device.

Enhanced integrated device electronics (IDE) or the AT attachment packet
interface (ATAPI) are used, and the device has 512KB as a buffer memory.

The DVD-ROM is accessed by the constant angular velocity (CAV) format,
which enables reading at speeds of 11.08MB per second (normal speed) at
the inner-most track section and 22.16MB per second (double speed) at the
outer-most track section. The CD-ROM's maximum speed is 20x.

The power supply voltage is 5V. The device measures 128mm x 129mm x
12.7mm, and it weighs 290g. The sample price is 50,000 yen (US$350).

Matsushita-Kotobuki officials said in the company's next major product it
will adopt a system that will enable faster reading.

C-Cube on that Matrox card G-200..................................

Digital Radar
C-Cube's new MPEG 2 codec, AGP 3D accelerators cards, and Intel's Xeon.

Hardware
New chips are cranking up performance levels for a new generation of AGP 3D acceleration cards. Boards such as Matrox's Millennium G200 and Number Nine's Revolution IV are ideal for general 3D content creation; they support both DirectX and OpenGL for 3D and include MPEG 2 playback. At the professional level, Dynamic Pictures' powerful new Oxygen RPM features an optional field-upgradable daughtercard, which can almost double the card's performance. So is AGP ready for prime time?
