Mitsui Bank has announced a merger with Prudential. This is in line with what I perceived the avenue would be for saving weak banks in Asia. If you want a market presence in a newly opened market, it is much cheaper to buy a portion of an existing firm than it is to try and gain market presence starting from scratch. I am sure that behind the scenes the Japanese govt is doing all it can to insure these mergers/buyouts go smoothly. The Foreign Minister is positioning himself to be the new Japanese Prime Minister.
