"Piffle" is a lovely word, Ned, and I'm impressed with Ron's ability to think of it in the midst of the shelling aimed at him at the moment. I also harbor hopes that he will play the "one-world" role so long that he comes to internalize some of it and slips a notch toward the liberal perspective. With any luck, the SEC case may turn out to be so much overkill that he even becomes a candidate for the sympathy vote as government bureaucratic victim of the year. Maybe he'll even come to seem human, though that's a lot to expect of anyone in these days of the carefully crafted, if contested, images of the spin doctors. Stay tuned for the next chapter of the unending soap opera, "As Ron's World Turns."

Speaking of the world turning, the more I look at history, the more I'm confronted with the distressing frequency with which villains and heroes change places with each other on the world stage. That is what Ron is being accused of, I think, of not staying consistent within one of these roles. Perhaps he doesn't have the genius of our semi-esteemed President for being able to play both roles at once. But I'm inclined to blame changing platforms and roles more than changing people. Ovid had it right in "Metamorphesis"--everything is in the process of transformation into something else. Expecting a stable consistency is asking too much of life. For the sake of myself, I'm willing to cut other people a little slack.
