And the first cdma smart appliance is... a truck!

QUALCOMM Introduces JTRACS Pro Vehicle Data
Gateway to Trucking Industry

PR Newswire - July 15, 1998 07:46

-OmniTRACS Customers and Component Manufacturers to Benefit from Real-time Vehicle
Diagnostics Reporting-

SAN DIEGO, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) today
announced the availability of its JTRACS Pro(R) Vehicle Data Gateway(R) product which uses the
OmniTRACS(R) system to provide on-board vehicle diagnostics and fault monitoring. Additionally,
this product has the ability to pass free form data to and from a truck engine's electronic control
module or any other electronic device connected to the J1708 databus. With this product,
QUALCOMM has created real-time vehicle diagnostics reporting and a communication path to
vehicle systems while the truck is en route. OmniTRACS- equipped customers will benefit by
having the ability to keep their vehicles monitored and maintained while on the road instead of in the
shop.

The new product utilizes the engine's J1708 databus, an industry standard data link found on most
medium and heavy-duty vehicles. The system was designed with an open architecture to maximize
flexibility and connectivity by facilitating communication paths between electronic control modules
on the vehicle and corresponding software applications on the dispatch computer. Initial applications
are expected from major engine and component suppliers. For example, the current method of
diagnosing and reprogramming engines and components requires the vehicle to be in the
maintenance shop. By using QUALCOMM's gateway feature, component manufacturers can
develop applications that will perform these functions while the truck is in route.

Additional monitoring capabilities of the system allow customers to query any Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) standard parameter at any time and during each engine start. For
example, once a fleet's speed threshold has been established, JTRACS Pro will check the vehicle
top road speed setting during each ignition start and only report changes in the setting back to the
dispatcher and/or maintenance supervisor.

"By monitoring the trucking company's parameters, JTRACS Pro will not only save our customers'
money but will assist them in ensuring that safety requirements are met," said Phil White, senior vice
president and general manager of QUALCOMM's OmniTRACS Division. "The JTRACS Pro
Vehicle Data Gateway has been designed in response to our customers' requests for access to
vehicle information that would help keep their trucks on the road and out of the shop."

The JTRACS Pro Vehicle Data Gateway also utilizes special software in QUALCOMM's
Network Management Center, which allows data generated from the truck to be sent to vehicle and
component manufacturers for diagnostic and prognostic information. As a result, customers and
vendors can now share critical engine and component data to make the entire maintenance process
more efficient and effective.

With over 230,000 OmniTRACS units sold worldwide, QUALCOMM is the leading provider of
mobile communications and information management systems to the transportation industry.
QUALCOMM currently has systems operating in the United States, Canada, Europe, Russia,
Middle East, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Korea and Malaysia.

Venezuela... tick off another country for cdmaOne and another million subscribers in the next year or two.

Telcel of Venezuela Selects Lucent Technologies for
cdmaOne Overlay of Its Wireless Network

Business Wire - July 15, 1998 12:15

CARACAS, Venezuela--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 1998--Lucent Technologies today
announced it has received a contract -- valued at up to $100 million -- to upgrade the cellular
network of Telcel, Venezuela's leading wireless telecommunications service provider.

Telcel will upgrade its system from analog to digital, utilizing the cdmaOne(R) digital wireless
standard, a step that will expand the capacity and customer features of its cellular network.

The initial phase of the modernization project is slated for Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, where
Lucent will install a mobile switching center (MSC), using its flagship 5ESS(R) Switch and
Autoplex(R) System 1000 Series II cell cites, and will provide technical expertise and support
services.

"We believe Lucent's advanced technology platform provides the innovation we require to move
into the next generation of services that our customers demand," said Enrique Garcia V., president,
Telcel's Operations Group. "As competition intensifies with the coming deregulation of Venezuela's
telecommunications marketplace, innovation and reliability will determine how successful we are in
winning subscribers."

Mario Lizaso, president, Telcel's Corporate Group, stated, "Lucent Technologies was one of two
vendors to conduct CDMA trials with Telcel in 1996. The trials proved CDMA's technological
advances and potential for growth, combined with superb voice quality."

The new Lucent equipment incorporating the cdmaOne standard is based on code division multiple
access (CDMA), the newest commercially deployed digital wireless technology based on an
industry standard called IS-95. This technology provides wireless carriers with greater call capacity
than analog and other digital systems and offers customers enhanced call quality that is comparable
to landline service. CDMA reduces the static and cross-talk sometimes heard on analog systems
and provides a "soft hand-off" capability that makes call hand-offs between cell sites and mobile
switching centers (MSCs) virtually unnoticeable to customers.

"We are extremely pleased to have been selected as Telcel's technology supplier in this important
project," said Carlos Linares, vice president for South America at Lucent Technologies. "We
believe our system architecture is a key selling point since the network we install today has all of the
necessary features to allow for smooth transitions to future innovations."

Telcel is a joint venture between BellSouth and Venezuelan-based Comtel. Telcel holds 60 percent
share of the cellular market in Venezuela, with more than 350,000 subscribers in Caracas alone and
over a million throughout the nation. Operating on the A-Band license, the company began
commercial service in 1991. Further information about Telcel is available on the worldwide web at
