caterpillar began its restructuring program in the mid-late 80s, when it was heavily in the red and engaged in a bitter struggle with the union.
It is a blue-chip company in a different industry, and comparing its stock performance in the last five years with Dell, a relatively recent tech start-up, is like comparing apples and oranges. But the bottom line remains the same. Outsourcing production is a good management technique. Companies can turn over inventory faster, reduce capital-intensive operations, and devote management resources to other areas. That remains undisputable.
I can cite you other examples of companies in other industries who have undertaken similar initiatives, but you get the point.
